Ushio and Tora Ushio to Tora ) is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Kazuhiro Fujita , published in Weekly Shonen Sunday Ushio and Tora Gaiden , one extra chapter in the Moon and Sun edition, and another side story chapter in Heroes Comeback - To Make Sure 3/11 is Not Forgotten .
Plot [ ] Ushio and Tora centers around the adventures and battles of Ushio Aotsuki , a teenage boy who is constantly stalked and assisted by a gigantic tiger-like yokai named Tora .
Ushio's family maintains the Fugen'in temple in Japan where he lives with his father, Shigure Aotsuki . 500 years ago, their samurai ancestor battled Tora to a standstill, and eventually trapped him against a rock using a cursed weapon called the "Beast Spear ". The Beast Spear grants strength, speed, and endurance to the wielder in exchange for their soul eventually transforming into a monster. Shigure goes on vacation and orders Ushio to air out the old books in the storehouse while watching the temple. While bringing the books outside, Ushio trips and discovers sealed doors to a chamber beneath the floor which he had never seen before. Forcing the doors open, he cracks the locks and accidentally unseals the cellar which Tora was trapped in.
Initially, Ushio refuses to remove the spear pinning Tora to the wall, as Tora made the mistake of mentioning that the first thing he would do upon being freed would be to devour Ushio. By the next day, Tora's unsealed presence attracts various yokai to the temple and Ushio is forced to free Tora in order to save his friends, Asako Nakamura and Mayuko Inoue . While Tora would like to eat Ushio, he dares not to since Ushio's power awakens upon wielding the Beast Spear. The series focuses on the relationship of Ushio and Tora, interspersed with battles against mythological foes, various friends they meet along the way, and with Tora's attempts to understand modern life. During the regular battles, Ushio slowly begins to notice that as much as Tora claims to be irredeemable, the yokai constantly has his back while fighting evil and he defends the innocent with more enthusiasm than he cares to admit.
